Here’s something I wanna say real quick, while I’m feeling salty: Amazon has totally contributed to the devaluation of literature. Those prices you see, the $13 they’re asking you to pay for a hardcover book? Those are deep, DEEP discounts that they’re able to implement because they don’t collect sales tax if they can get away with it, they don’t contribute money to the communities where they have a physical presence, they have shitty labor practices, Jeff Bezos has more money than god, etc.

They’re so omnipotent at this point that they’ve normalized the discounted prices for books as the standard. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve had someone come up to me and tell me what the price on Amazon is, expecting me to match it. The number of times I’ve been told, “Oh, it’s cheaper on Amazon, I’ll just get it there.” Even at author events, where book sales DIRECTLY CONTRIBUTE to whether or not that bookstore will be able to get more authors in.

So when you go into a bookstore, and you’re asked to pay $27 for a hardcover, remember: THAT IS THE COVER PRICE. Set by the publishers. The bookstore is not upcharging you. They are asking you to pay the value of the book. Amazon’s low prices come with a cost. Please, just keep that in mind.

This is a great post, and I just want to point out: publishers aren’t upcharging you either.

The cost of the book is the advance for the author, it’s the salaries for all the people who work on it (including editors, yes, but also designers and marketers and publicists and lawyers and accountants and everyone else who makes sure publishing works). It’s the cost of printing the books and the materials to print those books on and the warehouses to store those books in. It’s keeping the literal lights on.

No one in the book business, from the author to the publisher to the bookseller, is making themselves rich off your money. This is the cost to survive. Amazon is running at a deficit because they can make up the cost with other things they do, and because once they run everyone else out of business, they’ll be the only game in town and can charge whatever they damn well please.

y’all think if a customer come thru and berate the shit outta you and you just smile and say “thank you for being so patient, have a nice day” and they still call corporate on you corporate gonna be like “uh ok” and you won’t get in trouble?

yeah I seen one of my niggas get written up for telling a customer to go home because they were begging to come into the store 15 minutes after we’d closed and locked the doors.

I decided from that point that if imma get written up I might as well give em a good reason for it. I’ll tell a customer to go fuck themselves idc

I got fired for telling a customer I’m specifically not allowed to open my drawer to make change from one of his bills. He then proceeded to just grab one of the bills off my keyboard while the drawer was open and angrily tell me to just give him the change, the exact amount. I said calmly “I know how to make change sir” which apparently ticked him off so much he called later curious and chewed out my manager and said he was going to call corporate. My manager asked me what happened, I explained, he CHECKED the fucking camera and verified it and said in situations where a customer snatches a bill and replaces it with another one I should just call a manager because they have no way of knowing if there’s something up with it. Then a week or so later they fired me.

Mind you the first two things I was told upon being hired were 1) you have to check IDs and if you fuck up we will fire you and you have to pay a several thousand dollar fine to the state and 2) you’re not allowed to make change if a customer asks, only as part of a transaction.

retail is probably the only occupation on the planet where a company will fire you for doing your job exactly the way they asked you to.

i really want to make a company where the customer is not always right take your dumb asses home 

dbrand (a phone case/Graphic Design company) is probably the closest I’ve seen to that, they will literally tell their customers to go fuck themselves if they try throwing tantrums about product. But they’re an all-around cool company so they get away with it because most people know that’s how they are.

TIL that Adobe doesn’t like when people use “Photoshop” as a verb. Instead of saying “That image was photoshopped,” they want you to say “The image was enhanced using Adobe® Photoshop® software.”

the reason they don’t want you to use photoshopping as a verb is because if were to become so widely used that it were oficially known as a verb, they would lose all brand name copyright, essentially costing them millions in name copyright. i, personally, would love to see this happen so please use photoshop as a verb as much as you can
